Having heard all about Michelle, we just had to interview her!
How did you find yourself in interior design?
I had been in corporate America for 20+ years (in 2 separate but unrelated industries) … When my most recent employer sold in 2008, I decided it was a sign to work for myself. I’d always been good at design and so I began my company doing home staging & “Re-design”. With time, experience and confidence, I’ve pivoted to 100% interior design and have 2 wickedly talented designers who work with me.
Who is your biggest influence in interior design and why?
It’s not “Who” but what…And that is Instagram…With inspiration at my fingertips all the time, and making insta-friends across the globe there is a beautiful community of creatives that influence me daily.
How would you describe your design aesthetic?
My personal design aesthetic is very neutral, organic and contemporary. My interior design firm’s aesthetic is whatever our client dreams of…We are chameleons who translate our clients’ dreams into reality.
What do you love most about being a designer?
Impacting people’s lives for the better…They begin and end their day at home and we create spaces that should feel like a warm hug so they can go out into the world and be the best version of themselves…And then look forward to coming home
What color did you use most last year and why?
White…We used it on almost all of the walls in our projects … Various selections of white throughout the houses, tone on tone white wallpapers, and a lot of white drapery panels and pillows. Our clients all asked for something relaxing. We layered in various neutral tones on that, including taupes, grays, blues, and rich jewel tones. Whites allow these other colors to really shine.
What are you most excited about right now? Whether it be trends, materials, finishes, etc..
Believe it or not, I’m excited that people are staying home more and really understanding how their environment impacts them emotionally…Even the smallest of changes (like making your bed every day) can make a big mental shift to your day.
What is one trend you would love to just say goodbye to?
White, horizontal shiplap all.Over.The.House. Please, use it sparingly, use it vertically, use it in another color. Puhleeze.
What projects are you working on lately?
We just finished a vibrant addition to a home that included a home gym, we have multiple kitchen renovations going, another beautiful project that is a repeat client upsizing her home, and others who are re-decorating either new or existing homes.
Tell us a story about your favorite project! Are you still close with those clients today?
My favorite project personally (because I’m blessed with 2 designers who now do the majority of the work) was actually my first client…We helped her stage her home to sell, then I helped blend her & her husband’s styles into their new home, then we remodeled that home, then we decorated the nursery…And now I’m on to her newly divorced home. Which sounds sad, but she’s extremely happy and I adore her. We’ve had many non-business lunches and conversations and I’m blessed to call her my friend.
What’s next for you?
Educating the interior design industry on the business of interior design through my division of ml interiors group called “Designed for the creative mind“, because all designs are different but the process should remain the same.
